Then they go and stuff a pillow or a blanket into the drum!!! The Remo muffle ring system works! I use it on all of my bass drums. Yes there's thin plastic in between the wooden bearing edge of the drum and the rear of the head. But it's soft and conforms neatly to the shape of the edge. It allows much better resonance of the head and shell than a drum stuffed with pillows! I love it. Both on kick drums AND marching bass drums!
