Suprisingly Good

I purchased the Steven Slate ML-1A from Thomann partly through being interested in trying a modeling microphone versus the rest of my mic locker, but also to give Thomann business in response to them taking Fender to task, so a semi-impulse buy. I have to say I am glad I indulged myself!

Firstly the quality was noticeable straight out of the Box, packing suggested a professional item and that is what I bought. The mic feels weighty and well made, looks good and thankfully sounds great, I did a shoot out against several other Mics, it was noticeably well balanced, (maybe neutral is a better word) and comfortably competed (or in many cases bettered) the other mics in my shootout.

Then I tried the virtual microphone system software and it made me smile instantly. flicking between the different models I was able to find the nuances that suit my voice perfectly. The bundled pre-amps added some nice tonality, and the fact 2 microphones can be loaded at the same time is amazing. I love the Radio France Signature pack, especially the RF-Amethyst, which I assume is based on the JZ amethyst microphone. I love the JZ stuff, so that was a bonus for me.

I love it so far, as an impulse buy I am very very impressed.

Very Nice!

Reading other reviews, why buy a modelling mic if you're an "Analog only" guy? Great basic mic without the modelling, VERY good and versatile with it and very substantial and well built.
Having used a few of the mics modelled over a long career, I have zero problems with it's sound at all even compared (although not directly) to some seriously vintage and expensive mics.
As in the headline, Very Nice!

Upgrade from the old one
Axelnoren 20.10.2026
The sound feels crispier and more stable in tone on weaker preamps, even as the old one was very transparent and clean sounding as well. Feels strongly built and hope that it will handle slightly humid environments better than its predecessor.
