They protect the mouthpiece. It's true they're a bit smaller than average (width 1.4 cm at the tip and 1.5 cm at the bottom, length 2 cm), but large enough to protect the mouthpiece from bite marks.

Breaks and doesn't hold well !
Unfortunately, this was a disaster for me!
I had a gig abroad and had to bite the metal mouthpiece since these cushions aren't resilient enough.
