Harley Benton JB-62CC Mini SP

I've wanted a mini bass for ages but not a rubber stringed ukulele bass. I ordered a different mini bass recently, but returned it due to quality issues. No such issues with this Harley Benton Mini bass.
First impressions were very good, the proportions of the bass are great, and the pink finish is eye catching and well executed. I had wanted the green version, to match my JB-62CC, but they are out of stock. To be honest I think the pink just adds to the fun.
As previously mentioned the pink finish, on both the body and headstock, are well executed with no obvious flaws. The back of the neck has a smooth satin finish, while the fret ends have been dressed nicely with no sharp edges. The tuners and bridge, while basic and budget orientated, seem to do their jobs well. The three position string tree is a nice addition.
The HBZ passive pickups, along with the vol. vol. tone controls offer a range of usable tones.
There were a few minor issues with the bass when delivered, although all were rectified with a set up, something I would expect to do on any new bass irrespective of price point.
The neck pickup was too low, resulting in a slightly weak tone. I popped some extra foam under the pickup and adjusted the pickup heights to balance their outputs.
The action was a little high, even considering the lower tension of the short scale strings. After making adjustments at the bridge I have a low (1.75-2.25mm, G-E) action with no fret buzz. The intonation was also out, but easily sorted with adjustments at the bridge.
Playing wise it does require a bit of concentration to adapt to the 23" scale, but it doesn't take long. As you would expect with such a short scale, the bass hangs nicely on a strap without neck dive. With a slightly gentler technique I found drop D tuning playable.
It may be ideal for younger players, although the neck could be a bit wide for very small hands.
This is a fun, well made and totally functional bass.

My daughter has wanted a bass to be like me, so we've got her this for her 4th birthday next month. Other than some light fret sprout, it's a really cool little bass. "Little" being the operative word. The 23" scale is tiny. Especially after I've just played my Dingwall! I'm tempted to get myself a matching full size jazz bass...

Setup is all good enough, pickups sound fine, no scratchy pots and there's a full range from the tone control. Roasted maple is just lovely to play too. No complaints apart from the fret ends, but they won't take long to fix.

Od dawna się czaiłem na mini basik / ukulele basowe. Próbowałem akustyka z gumowymi strunami, ale to nie było to, a wersje solid body (Kala, Flight) z metalowymi strunami były trochę za drogie - to ma być bardziej taki gadżet, instrument podróżny, zabawka "dla jaj" - nie chcę na coś takiego wydawać pieniędzy jak na wiosło w pełnym wymiarze. I wtedy wchodzi on, cały na biało... a nie, na różowo! Małe wiosło w rozsądnych pieniądzach. Jakość wykończenia - nie mam uwag! Może mi się trafił taki wyjątkowo zadbany egzemplarz, ale naprawdę wygląda to bardzo dobrze, nie dopatrzyłem się żadnych niedoróbek, wszystko jest dopieszczone, lakier super, piękny gryf, może końcówki progów by się przydało trochę przyszlifować bardziej, ale nie kaleczą palców, raczej są delikatnie wyczuwalne. Dźwięk - tu trochę miałem w przeszłości problem z Bentonami, trafiło mi się kilka modeli gdzie przetworniki były nienajlepsze. Tutaj nie ma tego problemu - grają zdrowo, zaskakująco głośno jak na takie maleństwo, nie ma się do czego przyczepić. Gitara jest malutka, dla basisty przyzwyczajonego do długiej skali może to być dość śmieszne i zaskakujące, ale to chyba kwestia przyzwyczajenia. Dostęp do wyższych pozycji na gryfie może być trochę utrudniony z uwagi na rozmiary. Ogólnie tego szukałem i to dostałem w atrakcyjnej cenie. Polecam

Ich habe das Gerät nun ein wenig getestet und bin schwer begeistert. Der Mini Bass spielt sich wunderbar, hat ein tolles wertiges aussehen und sorgt in jedem Fall für ein kleines schmunzeln im Proberaum. Was passiert dann auf der Bühne? :-)

Was die Ernsthaftigkeit des Instruments angeht sollte man natürlich selbst für sich bewerten. Der Hals ist so dick wie die großen Kollegen. Somit würde ich nicht sagen, dass es ein Kinderinstrument ist. Es ist aber in jedem Fall zugänglicher. Und ja er spielt sich deutlich leichter als ein Longscale oder Shortscale. Nach etwas Gewöhnung natürlich. Und vom Gewicht erwartet einen auch nur die Hälfte seiner großen Geschwister.

Ich spiele sonst einen normalen Jazz Bass. Soundtechnisch höre ich so gut wie keinen unterschied. Und im Bandkontext noch weniger. Ja Sustain ist etwas geringer, aber der Ton selbst bleibt ähnlich stabil wie bei dem Großen. Wenn Druck fehlen sollte, wird der Amp nachgestellt.

Die Elektronik arbeitet bei mir sauber, die Tonabnehmer sind ok, ohne das ich sie tauschen müsste. Wer das möchte, kann das aber problemlos. Jazz Bass Tonabnehmer von Fender oder EMG können eingebaut werden. Platz für aktive Elektronik sehe ich aber nicht.

Ein tolles und ehrliches kleines Instrument. Es lohnt sich.

Update nach mehreren Proben. Mittlerweile stellt sich heraus, dass die Intonation nicht so gut einstellbar ist, dass es sauber klingt. Erst dachte ich, dass ich unsauber greife aufgrund des geringen Abstand der Bünde. Ist aber nicht so.

Als Beispiel habe ich sowohl im 0. Bund als auch auf dem 12. Bund ein E.
Dann habe ich auf dem tiefen F kein F sondern fast ein Fis. Und diese leichte Differenz sorgt dafür, dass vor allem die tiefen Töne schwammig klingen können. Eben leicht verstimmt. Nach ein paar Tagen fällt mir das mehr und mehr auf. Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, wie ich das löse. Eine Hilfe ist tatsächlich auf F im 1. Bund zu stimmen und die Intonation so an der Brücke zu stellen, dass im 12. Bund wieder ein E ist.
Dadurch ist das Griffbrett annähernd intoniert. Aber das tiefe E leider nicht. :-(

Allerdings spiele ich das tiefe E sehr selten und der Bass gefällt mir ansonsten richtig gut.
So hat wohl jedes Instrument seinen deadspot.
