Kali Audio IN-5 White

Can you buy better monitors? Of course - if you spend at least double the money.
These near-field speakers are a joy to work with. The first impression upon connecitng them (in my case: PC > Motu M2 > Kali's, using the balanced connection available on the Motu and on the Kali's) is of great transparency.
They go relatively deep for their size, but don't expect great sub-base: for that, you'll probably need the bigger box of the 8-inch version (I have not had the chance to personally hear those, but it goes a few Hz lower).
The build is relatively simple: a plastic front panel, no curved panels or special exotic woods. Your money goes to where it makes a difference, and is saved where that makes sense. (Still, I personally think they look quite good, especially this white version.) Four stars for the good but not great build quality.
The key words that describe these monitors best for me are transparency, openness, clarity, precision. They seem very balanced, without being shrill like the HS5 and Adam's A5X can sometimes be. great for longer sessions without fatigue.
They also go quite loud, but even at very low volume, they still give a very clear and balanced picture.
The precision and openness, supposedly thanks to the coincidental high/mids, allow for what is often described as their wide soundstage. For me, it's the transparency which really helps me identify and position all components in my tracks more easily.
I have no reservations to recommend these monitor to anyone who wants very clear and and well built monitors at a very reasonable price.

I use them to listen to music, I wanted something with decent built-in DSP that would work well nearfield on a desk with a wall behind, in a very small office (a bit over 3x2m).

They image and soundstage very well in nearfield, and the integrated correction can make up for the lack of bass in such a small space.
I've tried passive speakers with amps, and they never managed to sound right in this space unless I used software correction. But software is annoying to manage, so I wanted something hardware.

The Kali IN-5 offer great value for the price, but I can see where they cut corners, the fit of the plastic face where it meets the wood is not consistent between the 2 speakers I have, but it's not easily noticed.
And I don't care, they sound great.

They are also incredibly quiet for active speakers. No hiss within listening distance, only if you get close to 30cm can you hear a slight hiss on max gain. Which is incredible. If you have a really quiet room and sit close, turning down the gain will make even that slight hiss go away, and they will still go very loud if you need them to.

And guess what happens when I move them to the big room and can position them properly? The room starts shaking and there is no distortion, these things can go loud and clean.
If I had a bigger space I would add a subwoofer, for the really low notes.

I really recommend them for listening to music, can't speak for the production side, but they seem well recommended in that area also.

Wollte mir für mein kleines Heimstudio Boxen besorgen. Subwoofer mag ich keine (Nachbarn, ...), zu große Boxen nehmen den 2. und 3. Monitor Platz weg und sind für das kleine Zimmer zu groß, bei kleinen Boxen muss man Abstriche machen... - die erfüllen meine Wünsche perfekt.
Frequenzgang, Position der Instrumente, .. - für mich alles im absoluten Wohlfühlbereich für stundenlanges Arbeiten.
Einzig bei den Features (automatische Anpassung an den Raum, ...) halten sie mit einigen neuen Boxen nicht mit, stört mich aber nicht wirklich.
