Visual help in crowded areas
I color code my cable ends to help easier to find connections when something isn't happenning the way I planned.
The end caps and the rings can be combined to help categorize the cables (for example one color endcap for one cable length, and then different rings for the different cables), but still isn't too harsh looking for the musicians / audience, who wants everything in the "classic" colors.
