I have a love/hate relationship with this synth. It just doesn't work in some ways, for example the tuning is awful on lower registers, i had to write a plugin just to keep it in tune, which is weird since everyone asks PWM to fix this, but nothing is being done.
The keybed is awful, I'm kinda happy that I cannot even use it with my plugin as it requires external midi. Still, while awful it works.
And then the construction. I never in my life had any musical equipment that got cooked because I touched it, but here am I, waiting for my replacement synth, because I touched it and somehow this shocked the synth bad enough that it got fried. This shouldn't happen.
And one more, the lack of a manual and the support from PWM sucks.
But then the good, and the reason I put up with it: the sound.
The MS20 is no longer the king of dirt, because Malevolent is here, and nothing compares to it. And not just the dirt, this synth generally sounds and acts differently from others, it's brutal and raw, and in some way beautiful and deep. You into Lorn? Get this synth. You want a modern take on a reese sound but not in your DAW? Get this synth.
You like distortion? Get this synth.
If you are willing to put up with what is essentially a prototype of a synth you can expect things in return, that your Moogs, Rolands, and Arturias just cannot give you, a character that worths all the hassle.
